Fyodor Tolbukhin (16 Jun. 1894 - 17 Oct. 1949)
When Germany invaded the USSR, Tolbukhin was serving as chief of staff of the Transcaucasus Military District. In August 1941, he became chief of staff of the Crimean Front, and later became the assistant commander of the Stalingrad Military District. He was directly involved in the Battle of Stalingrad as commander of the 58th Army until March 1943. Here he was praised for his military competence.
He would command the Southern Front until May 1944, fighting the Germans through Ukraine. He then led the 3rd Ukrainian Front. He was promoted to Marshal of the Soviet Union in September 1944, and occupied Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Hungary.
