Cordell Hull (2 Oct. 1871 - 23 Jul. 1955)
Cordell Hull served as Secretary of State during the war, serving for a total of almost twelve years. His tenure saw some controversy, however. In 1939 and again in 1940, Hull ordered the refusal of Jewish refugees to enter the United States. Fortunately both ships in these instances found refuge, the first in the UK, and the second in the United States, following the intervention of Eleanor Roosevelt.
When Pearl Harbour was attacked in 1941, Hull angrily stormed at Japan’s ambassador and special envoy on the day, who apparently left embarrassed as they did not know of the attack.
He will be most remembered for his influential architect of the United Nations (for which he would receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1945). During World War II, Hull spent most of his time working on a framework for a world organisation that would, in effect, prevent a third world war. It was Hull, along with his staff, who wrote the Charter of the United Nations in 1943. Hull retired in 1944.
