Dudley Pound (29 Aug. 1877 - 21 Oct. 1943)
Pound was an experienced naval officer when war broke out, being First Sea Lord from July 1939. He was considered as a cunning man who could easily use his wits to disrupt the plans of Churchill. When appointed to the Admiralty, Pound was in frail health, but he served until his death in 1943. He is mostly remembered for leading the campaign during the Battle of the Atlantic, defeating the German U-boats. He was one of the first to see the importance of keeping the sea lanes between America and Britain open. However, during this time he was also blamed for the disaster of Arctic Convoy PQ-17
He was considered a likeable man, and was respected for his hard-working attitude by his peers; however some believed that he was not an effective First Sea Lord, lacking a strategic mind.
